Do you have the makings of a writer or have fresh ideas for the publishing industry? Have you spent countless sleepless nights mulling over ideas and putting down words while you lock away those manuscripts / business plans in the morning as you head off to your day job? Here’s your chance to take a step closer with The Litro Futures Development Programme, we are opening submissions to enter this life changing opportunity – we have three Mentorship opportunities and a traineeships up for grabs with Litro Magazine worth over £10,000. If you are a writer and chosen as a Mentee you will receive a year of support including:

  • 1-1 meetings, 4 times a year, with your mentor and the editorial team at Litro.
  • A year’s membership with Litro Magazine.
  • Networking and career development sessions.
  • Tailored signposting toward development opportunities, potential collaborators, bursaries, courses and events to benefit your needs as a writer.
  • Helping to shape your manuscript to make it as strong as it can be. This will include giving constructive feedback on what’s working & where it needs improving. This could be feedback on anything from character development, to plot, to pace, to length.
  • Signed to Litro Represents to get a publishing deal – (we’ve successfully secured publishing deals for three writers represented by Litro Represents since launching in 2017), or helping you submit your manuscript to literary agents.
    Giving you confidence in your own voice.
  • Thinking about how your book might sit alongside other published books in the market and recommending other books to read.
    Sharing insights on your book’s target audience and how to reach them.
  • Giving you experience of writing to deadlines and writing with direction over an extended time period.
  • Helping to shape their manuscript to make it as strong as it can be. This will include giving constructive feedback on what’s working & where it needs improving. This could be feedback on anything from character development, to plot, to pace, to length.
  • If you are chosen for the Traineeship Programme you’ll learn by doing, jumping into the deep end, and soaking up the day-to-day. Your introduction to publishing will be supported by a training programme designed to develop your editorial & publishing skills. You will receive the following support:

  • Trainee scheme candidates will be awarded a 6 month scheme with the possibility of a job offer at the end.
  • While there’s no promise of a job, we hope to guarantee that by the end of the traineeship, you will be in the best possible position to start a career in publishing.
  • Candidates will be paid, £11,000 (equivalent to £22,000 per annum), plus 12 days paid holiday for the six months traineeship.
  • You’ll spend time with all the Litro teams. You’ll work with marketing, sales and digital to help build your understanding of how our different departments work together to turn ideas into monthly editions of the magazine and get them to readers around the world. If you like what you see in a particular team, you can choose to spend some extra time with them.
  • We’ll cover travel costs to and from The Scheme selection days.
  • Sharing insights on your book’s target audience and how to reach them.
  • Giving you experience of writing to deadlines and writing with direction over an extended time period.
  • Giving you confidence in your own voice.
  • The possibility of a job offer at the end.
  • To apply, candidates will need to be from a BAME (Black, Asian, or Minority Ethnic) community, and/or from a socio-economically low income background.
    The Trainee scheme will be held at our offices in London, Somerset House. Candidates will learn by doing, jumping into the fire, and soaking up the day-to-day. Your introduction to publishing will be supported by a training programme designed to develop your editorial skills.

  • A Copywriter coming up with the most compelling way to describe Litro Magazine to sell as many copies as possible.
  • A Proof-reader spotting spelling and grammatical errors A Pitcher convincing the team why we should sign a writer for representation and help them publish a manuscript – the earliest draft of a book.
  • You’ll get to spend time with other teams too. Working with marketing, sales and online to help build an understanding of how the different departments work together to turn ideas into editions of the magazine and get them to readers around the world. You can choose to spend some extra time with the different departments.

    Here’s what to do

    If you are a writer you must be writing a full length novel in any genre and be looking to develop and broaden your writing career and not agented. Please email the first chapter and a synopsis. The synopsis shouldn’t be a blurb or a cover-style ‘teaser’, but a simplified explanation of the plot in one or two sides, listing the theme, setting and characters of your book, from the first to final chapter. We can only consider complete manuscripts.

    Those entering for the six month trainee scheme will need to submit a cover letter along with a 1,500 essay on why the scheme will benefit your career and what ideas you have for the future of the publishing industry, we want you to take on the world so don’t hold back!

    Sadly the programme is only open to those living in London, so please live or work in the Greater London area.

    Covering letter

    For writer please also include a covering letter giving an account of the background of the book and an account of your career to date. If you have been referred to Litro by a personal contact let us know in your letter. Do also say if you have been published in Litro in the past, and mention if your project has been seen or is being seen by any other agents or publishers.

    Presentation

    We want to know you and your achievements. Please make sure that your material is typeset so as to be clearly legible. Pages should be numbered. Please remember to include your name and a contact number and email address on the first page of your manuscript.
