LITRO submission guidelines

I have a maximum word limit of 3000, although a limit of 2500 is preferred to allow space for graphics.

I only accept emailed submissions – Word files are perfect. Please double space.

While LITRO is for the Underground, it doesn’t have to be about the Underground; there is no set subject matter. However, to protect my back and because I want to print fiction that has impact without relying on contentious material, I have adapted some guidelines from the BBFC:
• The use of strong language must be kept to an absolute minimum. Racist abuse is of particular concern
• Sexual activity may be mentioned, but not explicitly described
• Violence must not dwell on detail
• Any misuse of drugs must be infrequent and should not be glamorised or instructional

Basically, bear in mind that LITRO is about making good fiction freely available to anyone and isn’t the place for material that I think may cause undue offence.

Remember to include contact details on the manuscript itself, as I will need to send you a basic agreement before publishing. Sorry, there is no payment at present if your work is published (I will donate any proceeds to schemes encouraging reading and literacy in Lambeth -- details to be confirmed).

I will try to get back to everyone who contacts me, but I do tend to read submissions in batches so please don't be concerned if this takes a while. By all means email me to follow up. Thanks in advance!

I didn't want to have to do this but due to a high volume of submissions if you haven't heard back from me within 8 weeks of submission please feel free to submit your piece(s) elsewhere.

Please email files or questions to me (Mike Fell) at litro.fiction@gmail.com (no zip files please).

Special issues

Every now and then I plan to publish special issues of LITRO (like issue 8, which contained only true stories). Here are some more possibilities I was considering:
• Under-18 authors (I would be interested to hear from any teachers who might like to work with me on this)
• Very short fiction
• Poetry
• Graphic novel style
• Classic fiction
• Longer stories spanning two issues
• &c.

If you think you might have something suitable for any of the above categories, or would like to suggest a different special subject, please contact me. Please bear in mind that the above submission guidelines still apply.
