Litro Live! at the Camden Crawl - click to listen to Ana Silvera perform one of her songs at last Sunday’s Litro Live!

It may not have been the sunniest of Bank Holiday weekends in London on Sunday, but that was no deterrent to Litro Live! and the audience who gathered in the Edinboro Castle in Camden for our eclectic and exciting mix of leftfield performers. Singer and musican Ana Silvera charmed with her intimate and beguiling set; Garth Cartwright read from and discussed More Miles than Money: Journeys Through American Music, accompanied by Errol Linton on the harmonica. Journalist and writer Philip Wilding took us on a dark but comic trail with readings from his work,  included his acclaimed new novel Cross Country Murder Songs; Chris Salewicz, author of Redemption Song, discussed Bob Marley, his legacy and the Jamican music scene. London trio and Battle of the Bands 2007 finalists Mad Dog performed their set of blues-inspired underground rock; whilst event host MC Angel presented her upfront and witty observations on modern life and DJ 10sui (Tracie Storey) spun the decks between the acts.

LitroLive! at the Gaymers Camden Crawl

Sunday 2 May 2010 from 12–6pm

Garth Cartwright on American Music
The Kiwi-born wanderer (author of 2005’s best music book, “Princes Amongst Men: Journeys with Gyspsy Musicians”), talks us through his latest work, “More Miles than Money: Journeys Through American Music”, in which he sets out to see whether the American roots music he loves – blues and country, folk and soul – is still alive in the 21st century. His journey takes him from the sandstorms of the Burning Man Festival to the LA bus station to the Mexican cantinas of San Antonio, the Indian reservations of New Mexico to the last surviving juke joints of Highway 61. He is an award-winning journalist who regularly contributes to The Guardian, The Sunday Times, Songlines and the BBC World Service. He has compiled many CDs, knocked up bits and pieces for many a music and/or travel book and DJs whenever anyone lets him near turntables and a mixer.
… with Errol Linton on blues harp
Garth’s accompanied by Errol Linton on harmonica. Best known for his “Blues Vibe” combo, Errol has kept the legacy of Little Walter and Sonny Boy Williamson sounding raw, fresh and above all, strangely British.
Philip Wilding Cross Country Murder Songs, Philip is a journalist, writer and producer for radio, television and magazines, he’s also the co-presenter of Phill and Phil’s hugely successful Perfect Ten podcast (and sell-out live shows) alongside Phill Jupitus. Philip Wilding produced and co-presented the BBC 6 Music Breakfast Show with Phill Jupitus. Among others, he’s worked alongside Danny Baker, Mark Lamarr and Lauren Laverne.
Chris Salewicz on Bob Marley
Chris Salewicz, bestselling author of Redemption Song, the classic biography of Joe Strummer, interviewed Bob Marley in 1979. Now for the first time he brings to life not only the Rastafari religion and the music scene in jamaica, but the spirit of the man himself. Interviews with dozens of people who met Marley and have never spoken before are woven through the narrative, as Salewicz seeks to explain why he has become such an enigmatic and heroic figure, loved by millions all over the world.
